To do this, make an appointment at the trade office in your city or county. The appointment only takes a few minutes. There, you state that you want to work as a photographer. This naturally includes a business address, a business name, and your areas of expertise. For example, if you photograph families in addition to weddings, or earn money by selling videos, you should specify all of that here. Keep your business name simple and just use your own name. Adding your business activity, such as "Photography," to the end makes it self-explanatory and looks professional. By the way, some municipalities now offer the option of registering your business online using forms. You will receive confirmation by mail. The current costs for this range from €20 to €60, depending on the region. 2 Since photography is a craft, your next step is to register as a photographer with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts. As there is no longer a mandatory apprenticeship, registration is all that's required. The costs for this vary, but are usually between €150 and €300. 3 Afterward, you will receive a questionnaire for tax registration from the tax office. In many municipalities, you can easily download the form online in advance. Completing it is mandatory, so be sure to get help from a tax advisor. The questionnaire asks you to enter your contact information and estimate your income. We recommend specifying a separate business account right away, so you can keep your business and personal finances separate. You'll also receive a tax identification number from the tax office, which you should include on your invoices. These are your first steps toward self-employment as a photographer.
