The Problem of Factions in the Church (WSC). 1. Read 1 Corinthians 1:10-12 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What problems are mentioned? (verse 10 – divisions; verse 11 – “disputes”; verse 12 – “among you they say, ‘I am of Paul’; ‘I am of Apollos’; ‘I am of Cephas’; ‘but I am of Christ’”) b. What words are used in other translations instead of “disputes”? (“you quarrel among yourselves” (NIV); “strife” (RSV, Stern); “rivalries” (RP)) c. How problematic are disputes in light of Romans 1:28-32? (along with other vices that bring God’s judgment!) 2. Read 1 Cor. 3:3, 4 (in turn) and answer the questions: a. What is the first reason for divisions and the phenomena that accompany them? (verse 3 – “you are still carnal”) b. What does “carnal” mean in Romans 7:14, 22, 23? (having aspirations that are contrary to God's law) c. What is the second reason for divisions? (v. 3 - "Are you not walking as men?") d. Check the ends of v. 3 and 4 in other translations (v. 3 - "You live according to ordinary human standards" (Stern); v. 4 - "Are you not men?" (KAS) - this is typical of people) 3. Have similar problems ever occurred in your church? II. Looking to Jesus (PN). 1. Read 1 Cor. 1:10, 13 (in turn) and answer the questions: a. What, in essence, does v. 10 call for? (toward unity in all things) b. What is the purpose of the first question of v. 13? (See v. 9 - "You were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ" - this is the nature of the church!) c. What is the purpose of question 2 in v. 13? (See 1 Cor. 5:15 – "that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them.") d. What is the purpose of question 3 in v. 13? (See Gal. 3:27 – "have put on Christ" – baptism introduces everyone into a single reality!) 2. Which of these factors of unity are closest to you? III. Wisdom and Maturity (BT). 1. Read 1 Cor. 3:1-4 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. What characteristics in this passage are synonymous – v. 1? ("as with those of the flesh, as with babes in Christ.") b. What are the characteristics of babes? (verse 2 – “I fed you with milk” – see Heb. 5:12 – the basics; verse 3 – “envy, strife, and discord”; verse 4 – “one says, ‘I am of Paul,’ and another, ‘I am of Apollos.’”) 2. Read 1 Cor. 2:6-16 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. Check the beginning of verse 6 in other translations (“among those who have reached maturity” (NIV) – in the orig. τέλειος (teleios)) b. Which characteristics in this passage are synonymous – verses 6 and 15? (mature and spiritual) c. What are characteristic of the mature? (v. 6 – "We speak wisdom to those who have reached maturity" (NIV); v. 10 – "God revealed it to us by His Spirit"; v. 12 – "We have received... the Spirit from God"; v. 15 – "the spiritual judges all things" – "discerns everything" (NIV), "can evaluate everything" (Stern); v. 16 – "we have the mind of Christ") 3. How mature are you spiritually? IV. Ministry in Christ's Example (NIV). 1. Read 1 Cor. 3:5-9(a) (one by one) and answer the questions: a. How is the church depicted? (v. 9 – "God's field") b. What words are used to describe church leaders? (v. 5 – "they are only ministers"; v. 9 – "fellow workers with God") c. What are the roles in reaping the harvest? (v. 6 – "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase"; v. 7 – "Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but God who gives the increase") d. Check 1 Cor. 4:1 in other translations ("servants of Christ" (RBO); "trustees" (Stern)) 2. Are you a servant of God? V. A Lifestyle Reflecting the Cross (CT). 1. Read 1 Cor. 4:11-16 (one by one) and answer the questions: a. How can the lot of a servant be described? (vv. 11-13 – hardship) b.
