A Tour Through History at Fort Custer National Cemetery - Augusta, Michigan
Join me on a tour through history at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. Located close to Battle Creek, Michigan, Fort Custer is a United States National Cemetery managed through the National Cemetery Administration. It was officially opened as a National Cemetery in 1981, however, the history of the grounds goes back to the early founding of Camp Custer which was built in 1917. There is an older Forst Custer Post Cemetery which was founded later in 1943, which was included in the grounds which now comprises over 800 acres. There are many monuments and memorials at Fort Custer National Cemetery, as well as a fascinating history starting with World War I and moving forward to present day. 26 German soldiers are buried at the cemetery, who were prisoners of war being held at Fort Custer during World War II. There is also an unknown soldier from the American Civil War who was relocated in the 1986 and reinterred here.
