Remembering the Interurban: Michigan's Historic Electric Street Car System - Battle Creek, Michigan

Take a tour through history remembering the Interurban: Michigan's historic electric street car system. This story although centered around Battle Creek, Michigan, covers the history of this electric light rail system which literally meant 'between cities'. The Interurban ran between Kalamazoo to Jackson, through Battle Creek, Marshall and Albion. There were additional systems that ran to Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint and many other Michigan cities. The period that this first electric rapid transit system existed was between 1890 through the early 1930's. Prior to that, there was the street car system with cars being pulled on tracks by horses. Many cities aross the US had electric rail cars lines, also known as trollys. Most of this type of transportation were phased out as a result of the growth and popularity of the automobile.
