Hiking Gimli Ridge | Valhalla Provincial Park | British Columbia

Day hike to Gimli Ridge to see the mountain goats and the massive shark fin peak. Before summer ended, my friends and I were able to spend some time backpacking at Valhalla Provincial Park. We drove for about 4 hours to Winlaw, set up camp for the night in a lovely campground and headed to Gimli ridge trailhead first thing in the morning. The drive through forestry road was a bit rough on the last couple kilometers. We were driving a Honda Pilot, which made it to the trailhead no problem. Gimli Ridge trail is about 9 km out and back with an elevation gain of approximately 892 meters. It was quite steep. I think we might have taken the goat trail at some point on the way up because we saw the actual switchback trail on the way down. We were welcomed by a really thick fog, with almost zero visibility. We still went anyway. When we made it to the top, the fog stayed covering the whole damn view! It was disappointing. However, we were able to see some mountain goats up close and personal. It was neat to see them in their natural habitat. We finally gave up waiting for the fog to clear up and headed down after an hour. As we were just coming down close to the tree line. The sky cleared showing some blue skies and the magnificent shark fin that is Gimli Peak came out in the open. We were so happy! Our efforts were somehow worth it right to the very last minute.
