Hello, Nice to Meet Rue — My 2008 Jabiru J230

Nice to meet Rue! In this episode, I introduce you to Lil' Rue — my 2008 Jabiru J230 — and take you flying with me for the first time on the podcast. Rue gets her name the easy way: she's small, and "Rue" comes from her manufacturer, Jabiru — which also happens to be a family name, so it fit twice over. She cruises around 110–120 knots indicated and flies the pattern noticeably slower than a conventional trainer, which takes some getting used to. This flight includes touch and goes, some spot-landing practice, and a callsign mix-up on the radio that confused both me and ATC — I didn't even realize it happened until I went back and listened to the recording afterward. It's a good reminder of how easily a moment of distraction can cascade on frequency, for pilots and controllers alike. I added voiceover throughout — kind of like director's commentary — to give you more context on what you're seeing and hearing as the flight unfolds. This is part of the Student Pilot Cast, where I share real flying, real mistakes, and real lessons alongside my own training and instructing. 🎧 Full podcast: studentpilotcast.com #Jabiru #JabiruJ230 #StudentPilot #FlightTraining #GeneralAviation #LightSportAircraft #LearnToFly #CFI #AviationPodcast 0:00 Meet Lil' Rue: Intro to the Jabiru J230 2:19 Engine Start & Preflight 3:17 Taxi & Getting the ATIS 6:33 Cockpit Warning Lights Explained 28:47 Cruise Speed & Performance 35:41 Why We Call Her "Lil' Rue" 38:33 Touch and Goes & Spot Landings 44:12 The Callsign Mix-Up on the Radio 47:44 Final Landing & Full Stop 53:02 Wrap-Up
