From dawn on the banks of the Nile, through the bustling markets, the Madrasa al-Azhar, Saladin's Citadel high above the city, the workshops of coppersmiths, dyers, and tanners, to the storytellers and sleeping alleyways of the night. We encounter artisans, merchants, scholars, Mamluks, and a city that, at that time, was one of the most important in the world. Around 1200, Cairo was the capital of the Ayyubid Sultanate, ruled by Sultan al-Adil, Saladin's brother and successor. With approximately 200,000 to 250,000 inhabitants, it was larger than any European city of that era—denser, more international, and wealthier than many realize today. We also look back at the burning of Fustat in 1168, when Vizier Shawar ordered the ancient capital to be set ablaze to save it from the Crusaders of King Amalric I. From this fire, 32 years later, the world we travel through today was born. This reconstruction is based on a combination of AI-powered visual representation of historical sources such as the writings of al-Maqrizi, Ibn Jubayr, and the Geniza documents; archaeological findings on the medieval urban development of Cairo; and Fustat's modern research on the economy, society, and daily life in Ayyubid Egypt. Note on the presentation: Some of the images shown in this video were reconstructed using artificial intelligence. For many scenes, no direct contemporary visual sources exist, such as paintings, engravings, or archaeologically verifiable views. The visual representations are therefore approximations and not exact 1:1 depictions of historical reality. The goal is to present the most plausible and detailed picture possible of each era, based on archaeological findings, written records, and modern historical research. Furthermore, current AI technology still has limitations. Therefore, inaccurate details, anachronisms, or visual discrepancies may occur in individual scenes that do not correspond to historical reality. The spoken content of this video, however, is consistently based on the current state of research. Known errors in this video: Anachronistic projecting mashrabiya bay windows—flat, flush-mounted wooden lattices would be correct for Ayyubid around 1200. Isolated minarets with slender pencil shafts or multiple galleries—only the squat, square mabkhara style with a small dome or pavilion would be correct for 1200. Isolated onion domes on towers—not documented for Ayyubid Cairo. Onion domes in this form are a later, post-Ottoman influence. In some scenes, the stucco and carving work on arcades and fountains is slightly too detailed or intricate—the ornamental refinement of these elements only developed more fully during the Mamluk period. Occasional cobblestone paving in simple residential streets—for Cairo in 1200, tamped earth with stones would generally be correct; pure cobblestone paving would be more common in central streets and squares. 💬 Now I'm interested in your opinion: What surprised you the most?
