The Congress of Vienna and the Holy Alliance managed to ensure a long period of diplomatic stability and peace between the great European powers after the devastating Napoleonic Wars. However, this political order was built on the sacrifice of civil liberties and the national aspirations of the oppressed peoples. The Romanian space was deeply affected by the international sanctification of the annexation of Bessarabia by the Russian Empire and by the blocking of the ideals of political emancipation in the Principalities. The attempt of the great absolutist monarchies to "freeze time" through censorship and military repression came into direct collision with the profound transformations brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The emergence of new dynamic classes, such as the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, favored the unstoppable spread of liberalism and nationalism on the continent.
