Okayama Travel Vlog EP4 A day trip from Okayama to Himeji by Shinkansen. The star is of course Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — we take our time soaking in over 400 years of history, then stroll through the lush green Kokoen Garden. (Visited: 2026 / 05) After arriving in Himeji, we hop on a bus right outside JR Himeji Station to save some energy. Instead of heading straight in, we first stop by nearby Shiromidai Park to capture the distant castle together with the "shachi" ornament in the foreground. Tickets are available from the vending machines — we went for the combo ticket covering both the castle and Kokoen Garden. As it was the off-season and the castle had just adjusted its prices, whether to book online really depends on the crowds. Stepping into this "White Heron Castle," you take off your shoes before entering the keep and tuck them into a bag — possibly thanks to the price change, a nicely made shoe bag now comes included. Inside, the keep has plenty of steep stairs, so watch your step. We pass the exhibits on each floor, peek out at the window views, look for the East and West Great Pillars, and finally reach the Osakabe Shrine on the top floor. See how many "shachi" you can spot up on the roofs! In the afternoon we visit Kokoen Garden, a beautifully maintained sea of green. The restaurant was already full and no longer taking guests, but simply slowing down and enjoying the scenery is a lovely option in itself. On the way back we walk, keeping an eye out for the Gundam and Zaku manhole covers, and from the observation deck on the second floor of JR Himeji Station we catch one last view of the castle. In the evening we check into our second hotel, Hotel Abest Grande Okayama — again a convenient pick, with a department store and supermarket right downstairs.
