Have Britain's brewers been using American hops for centuries?

Amidst the rumbling debate around the proliferation of American style pale ales in British pubs, a few people have made the claim that Britain's brewers have been using American hops for centuries. While this is true, I think it needs to be framed properly in context to fully understand the implications, which is what I've tried to do here. Were the beer drinkers of Victorian Britain actually knocking back grapefruit flavoured pale ales made with American hops? No, not really. Many thanks once again to beer historian Ron Pattinson.
