This important road infrastructure connects Florence with the Tyrrhenian coast, passing through the Tuscany region. The route extends for approximately 81.7 km and is one of the busiest connections in Tuscany, managed entirely by Autostrade per l'Italia. The A11 is also part of the European route E76, which plays a role in the system of international connections between routes in central Italy. Upon leaving Florence, the highway heads west, crossing the Arno plain, the densely populated and industrialized area of ​​Prato and Pistoia, and then continuing toward the Valdinievole and the Lucca plain. This stretch connects several urban centers and areas of significant economic activity before approaching the Lucca area. Along the route, you'll encounter several exits and junctions that provide access to urban areas or major regional roads. Notable exits include Prato Est, Prato Ovest, Pistoia, Montecatini Terme, Chiesina Uzzanese, and Altopascio, which serve residential centers and surrounding areas, respectively. Proceeding west, you'll reach the Lucca Est exit and, from there, Lucca Ovest, points from which you can branch off to inland destinations or continue on the highway. The main stretch of the A11 motorway towards Pisa ends in Lucca, where it joins the A11/A12 motorway branch, also known as the Lucca–Viareggio link road. This link road is approximately 18 km long and was built in the 1970s to facilitate the connection between Florence and the A12 motorway, especially for those heading north towards Genoa. The link road has two lanes in each direction, without emergency lanes, and facilitates vehicle movement from a major inland route towards the main artery of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. The link road has few exits: besides Lucca Ovest, the Massarosa exit is the only intermediate point before the A12 link road. Over the years, only one service area has been built in the area of ​​this branch road—Monte Quiesa Nord—available to those traveling towards Viareggio. After the branch section, the highway merges with the A12 motorway, the so-called Autostrada Azzurra, the main route connecting Genoa to Rosignano Marittimo, passing along the Tyrrhenian coast. Here, the journey continues towards Genoa, maintaining its natural northerly orientation. The A12, after joining the A11/A12 link road, crosses a coastal portion of Tuscany characterized by its proximity to the sea and by towns reflecting the area's tourist and residential vocation. Among the motorway points along this route are Viareggio-Camaiore and, continuing north, the section where the "Versilia" service area is located. The Versilia service area is located along the A12 motorway towards Genoa and is identified as a rest and refueling point at approximately km 131.2 of the motorway. The combination of the A11, the A11/A12 link road and the A12 therefore forms a continuous and fluid itinerary from Florence towards the Tyrrhenian coast and beyond, towards Genoa, crossing some of the most important areas of Tuscany, from the inland areas of the plain to the coast of Versilia.
