Pilot's Narrow Escape: How This A-10 Came Dangerously Close to Being Shot Down!

Operation Allied Force commenced on 24 March 1999. It was a NATO operation against Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. One of NATO aircraft heavily involved, although not necessarily in the spotlight was A-10. Taking off from Aviano and later Gioia del Colle in Italy, pilots of this aircraft performed not only strike missions but also vital Forward Air Control (Airborne) and Combat Search and Rescue. On 2 May 1999, Major Phil 'Goldie' Haun was flying a FAC(A) sortie over Eastern Kosovo. Problems with SEAD support made his mission very challenging but ground defenses would prove to be the greatest challenge.
