The Pursuit | Tokyo World Champs Marathon Build: Episode 2

This episode highlights my biggest marathon simulation workout of the build, a 12 mile tempo run just faster than marathon pace. I averaged 4:42 per mile with the help of my teammates Casey Clinger and Conner Mantz. What was most satisfying was coming back two days later with a solid base hit day with some alternating tempo miles on a grass/asphalt loop coupled with some quick 800m reps on the track. I'm excited to race at the Marathon World Championships in Tokyo on September 15th, 2025. After a breakthrough year in 2024 where I made my first Olympic team and placed top 10 in the world, I have big goals to finish for 2025. After 3 seventh place finishes at World Major Marathons and running a new personal best of 2:07:04, I am ready for another break-through. Follow along as I share my journey in a four-part docuseries highlighting my build to the World Championships. Thank you to Stryd for powering the data for this episode. After my marathon simulation workout, it was satisfying to dive into the data to see how my power per mile stayed consistent throughout the session. It was also insightful to see how my footpath and fatigue metrics changed throughout the session. My leg spring stiffness slowly decreased (though not drastically) throughout the session showing a buildup of fatigue. A metric that is critical for late in the marathon. Check out more about Stryd here: https://dub.sh/1woumEm Thank you to Core for guiding my heat prep and monitoring my thermal data for this marathon build. It is predicted to be incredibly hot and humid on marathon race day in Tokyo (80° F with 80% humidity). With only 5 weeks to go, passive and active heat acclimatization is in full swing – sauna 5 days a week and two specific double sessions in layered clothing. My heat adaptation score reached 73% this week. I have been using heat acclimation protocols to get ready for hot and humid races since 2019, but with the Core 2 Thermal Sensor, I can now track the data behind my heat training. It is a fine line between being prepared for the heat, and not overdoing it, and with Core I hope to find the perfect balance.
