Many celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, or, in Germany, Shirin David, face accusations of cultural appropriation. They use deliberately dark makeup or have dreadlocks, and are therefore accused of unreflectively exploiting the characteristics of other, marginalized cultures and even profiting from them. For some, this is a completely inappropriate appropriation and enrichment of elements that have often led to centuries of oppression and racism. For others, this goes much too far: For them, it's about appreciation, cultural exchange, and aspects of a modern lifestyle. But where are the limits when it comes to adapting cultural elements? When does cultural appreciation become cultural appropriation? Or is cultural appropriation inherently discriminatory?
