Habba Khatoon is one of the most iconic landmarks of Gurez Valley. The pyramid-shaped mountain is named after Habba Khatoon, the celebrated 16th-century Kashmiri poetess, often called the "Nightingale of Kashmir." She was married to Yusuf Shah Chak, the last independent ruler of Kashmir before the region came under Akbar's control in 1586. According to local tradition, after Yusuf Shah Chak was captured and exiled by the Mughals, Habba Khatoon was heartbroken and is believed to have spent time wandering through the valleys of Kashmir, including Gurez, composing soulful poems known as "Lol" (lyrical love songs). The majestic mountain in Gurez was later named in her honor, symbolizing her enduring love, grief, and poetic legacy. Today, Habba Khatoon Peak is one of Gurez Valley's most recognizable attractions. Surrounded by the flowing Kishanganga River and lush meadows, it attracts travelers, photographers, and history enthusiasts. The mountain stands not only as a natural wonder but also as a powerful symbol of Kashmir's rich cultural heritage, literature, and timeless love story.
