Korleis spele flishorn | Innføring med Karl Seglem
The flishorn, or tungehorn, is a goat horn fitted with a reed of juniper, and it produces sound the same way a clarinet or saxophone does: a wooden reed that vibrates. But the reed sits on the side rather than underneath, which makes the instrument wilful and a little hard to tame. In this video, saxophonist Karl Seglem takes you all the way into the flishorn. He explains what the horn is and how it differs from the trumpet-blown horn, shows the finger holes and how the reed works, and goes carefully through all its parts: how to set the horn to your mouth, mount the reed, and play. Our aim is simple: to lower the barrier to taking up the flishorn, and to make this knowledge freely available to everyone. If you have any questions about the flishorn, don't hesitate to get in touch. This country has produced a number of distinctive musicians who have made it their project to fuse musical traditions (often from their own home regions) with contemporary expression, world music, and improvised jazz. Seglem stands out as a central figure among them, and he is without doubt one of the great innovators and visionaries in Norwegian music. He breathes new life into both Norwegian folk-music traditions and jazz through his unwavering willingness to blend idioms, explore the borderlands, and take up new instruments, sounds, and perspectives.
