Arrested and subjected to intensive interrogation by the Gestapo, Mayer maintained the cover of his network and negotiated directly with Gauleiter Franz Hofer to have Innsbruck declared an open city, thus preventing its destruction before the arrival of the US 103rd Infantry Division. Where fiction required a burning movie theater, real history dismantled the mythical Alpine Redoubt with fifty coded messages and a masterful bluff.
