Constructing the Fibonacci - Understanding Nature's Spiral - with a Compass and Graph Paper

The spiral is a numerical pattern that is derived by adding the previous two terms - we call this the Fibonacci sequence. 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144... You can make square boxes, each with the side lengths of the fibonacci numbers. These squares can then have quarter circles drawn in them with a compass to make a perfect spiral. I, for one, think it's funny to give credit to Fibonacci for something both used by the Egyptians (their lower kingdom was represented by a spiral and when the upper and lower kingdoms united, the combined the crowns) and in nature. The spiral shape gives efficiency, balance, and even strength and we see it in the galaxy, in a storm or tornado, in a wave, our body, shells, pine cones, pineapples, even in our DNA. So the spiral is indeed a special shape.
