Lost Art Found in a 139-Year-Old Cemetery — The Story of Eldren Bailey
In this episode of Adventures Into History, we’re exploring South-View Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia — a 139-year-old landmark and one of the most significant African American cemeteries in the United States. Founded in 1886 by nine Black businessmen who sought to create a dignified resting place for their community, South-View became the final resting place of more than 80,000 African Americans, including educators, veterans, civil rights pioneers, and artists who shaped the nation’s story. Among them is Eldren M. Bailey (1903–1987) — a self-taught sculptor, mason, and visionary whose art can still be found across Atlanta’s historic cemeteries. Bailey began creating handmade headstones in the 1940s, carving each one by hand with honorifics like Mr., Mrs., or Miss — a deliberate act of respect during the Jim Crow era when Black Americans were routinely denied such dignity. His gravestones, made from rough concrete and plaster, bear simple but powerful artistry — often adorned with rosettes, garlands, or crosses, and inscribed with the names of the funeral homes he partnered with. Though Bailey’s larger sculptures eventually earned museum recognition, it’s these headstones — scattered throughout cemeteries like South-View — that best reflect his deep connection to the people he served. In this video, we visit Bailey’s own grave — marked by one of his own creations — and search for his surviving works hidden among the rows of South-View’s 19th- and 20th-century graves. Through his art, we uncover a story not only of creativity but of cultural resistance, pride, and remembrance. This work is made possible by viewers like you!
