Odkrycie pra-walenia sprzed 38 milionów lat na Lubelszczyźnie / dr Daniel Tyborowski
Lecture by Dr. Daniel Tyborowski as part of the Paleontological Evenings series at the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw [May 27, 2026] The discovery of the remains of a 38-million-year-old proto-cetacean in the Lublin region is one of the most important paleontological discoveries in Poland in recent years. A fragment of the jawbone of an ancient whale from the Eocene Epoch was found in an amber mine. This is the first confirmed find of an Eocene whale in Poland. Scientists have determined that approximately 38 million years ago, the area of today's Lublin region was under the waters of a warm, shallow sea. A variety of marine organisms lived there, including sharks, fish, and ancient whales. The discovered individual was likely about two meters long and about the size of a modern dolphin. The find has enormous significance for research on the evolution of cetaceans. It confirms that ancient marine mammals also occurred in Central Europe, and that migration routes for these animals may have passed through what is now Poland. Thanks to such discoveries, scientists can better reconstruct the history of ancient seas and the evolution of modern cetaceans and dolphins. Dr. Daniel Tyborowski is a paleobiologist, geologist, evolutionist, academic, and science popularizer. His research interests focus on the evolution, functional morphology, histology, and paleoecology of secondary aquatic vertebrates – marine reptiles and cetaceans. In 2018, he defended his doctoral dissertation with distinction, entitled "Paleobiology and the Environment of Late Jurassic Marine Vertebrates from the Owadów-Brzezinki Quarry, Central Poland." The topic of his doctoral dissertation concerned unique fossils of ichthyosaurs, sea turtles, and bony fish. He served as a museum assistant professor and an employee of the Museum of the Earth of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. As part of his popularization activities, he gave lectures and talks at the Museum of the Earth of the Polish Academy of Sciences, including the series "Wednesday Meetings with the History of the Earth," which were broadcast on Wszechnica. Since 2024, he has been a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Historical, Regional and Paleontology at the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw. His current research focuses on the evolution and diversification of food specializations among marine tetrapods (ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs, and cetaceans) in the context of ecomorphological convergence and Sensory. https://danieltyborowski.wordpress.com/ History of the Earth Playlist - • dr Daniel Tyborowski - Dzieje Ziemi i Wiec...
