In this lecture, Dr. Daniel Tyborowski takes us to the fascinating world of prehistoric oceans, where we learn about extraordinary cartilaginous fish and one of the most important phenomena in evolutionary biology – evolutionary convergence, also known as convergent evolution. The starting point for the story is the discovery of an extraordinary species of shark that lived during the Cretaceous Period, a time when dinosaurs dominated land. Its unusual body structure prompts the question: why do organisms distant from each other on the tree of life often become surprisingly similar to each other? The lecture demonstrates that evolution has repeatedly led different groups of animals to similar solutions. Just as ichthyosaurs resembled modern dolphins, and the wings of birds, bats, and pterosaurs arose independently, so too in the world of sharks, forms surprisingly similar to other ocean inhabitants have appeared. During the meeting, we will learn about: unusual species of extinct sharks, the evolutionary history of cartilaginous fish, the mechanisms of evolutionary convergence, giant filter-feeding animals of ancient seas, the role of fossils in reconstructing the history of life, changes occurring in the oceans over millions of years. Dr. Tyborowski also explains why some sharks abandoned active predation and began feeding on plankton, much like modern whale sharks and basking sharks. We'll learn about the evolution of giant filter feeders and the environmental conditions that favored the emergence of such animals. This is a story about the extraordinary creativity of evolution, the history of the oceans, and organisms that demonstrate that nature often solves the same problems in very similar ways—even if completely independently. Dr. Daniel Tyborowski is a paleobiologist, geologist, and evolutionist. He specializes in research on the paleobiology, evolution, and paleoecology of extinct marine vertebrates. He has given numerous lectures popularizing knowledge about the history of life on Earth, marine reptiles, sharks, and the evolution of ancient ecosystems.
