In 1952, Yuri Knórozov deciphered the Mayan script. He discovered that the Mayan script was composed of 356 characters, a mystery to all Mayan scholars. With his discovery, the ancestral language of Yucatan could be interpreted. This was a revolution for scholars of Mayan culture. The story of how Yuri Knórozov came to join the Mayan culture is extremely interesting and begins when he was a soldier in the Red Army in Berlin at the end of World War II. By chance, he discovered the Mayan Codex of Madrid, the Mayan Codex of Dresden, and the Mayan Codex of Paris. These, along with books and interpretations written by François de Landa in the 16th century, were fundamental to deciphering the Mayan script. One of Knórozov's biggest problems was that he did so during the Cold War, without being able to visit Mexico or the Mayan regions even once.
