Laser skin resurfacing is also an excellent treatment for acne scars. This treatment can reverse ‘skin age’ by up to two decades. Unlike fractional lasers such as Fraxel, ProFractional, Portrait, Pixel, Halo fully ablative laser resurfacing removes all layers of skin. Laser resurfacing goes much deeper, and is 20-40 times more ‘intense’ than fractional lasers. Fully ablative laser resurfacing is very different from fractional lasers. Fractional lasers only treat a ‘fraction’ of the skin’s surface – laser machines such as Fraxel, Pearl Fractional, Picosure Focus, Pixel, Portrait, Fractional Edge CO2,Lumenis Ultrapulse, CORE CO2, and ProFractional are examples of fractional lasers. Fully ablative lasers remove the upper of epidermal layers of the skin. I manually control the depth of ‘ablation’ and how deep the lasers go. Fractional lasers will require multiple treatments, usually 4-5 sessions, whilst laser resurfacing using fully ablative lasers will only require one treatment. In the majority of cases I use 2 lasers in different settings to achieve the end goal. I call this Hybrid Laser Resurfacing. I combine fully ablative Erbium Sciton Laser, with fractional CO2 laser. Depending on the end goal, I may only use Erbium as a fully ablative laser, then swap to CO2 as a fractional laser. In other cases I use CO2 fully ablative and then combine Erbium as my last pass. Combinations are infinite, and each part of the face will require different techniques for optimal results. Watch my YouTube videos on lasers to gain some understanding of the complexity of choosing what lasers to use in particular locations. If the patient has darker skin, I would use more erbium and less CO2 as dark skin or ethinc skin patients have a higher chance of skin darkening with CO2 lasers. If I am treating lighter skin Caucasian patients, I opt for more CO2 as in most cases sun damage and collagen production needs to be optimized in this population of patients. Laser resurfacing is only one of the many techniques I practice to achieve the end goal- whether it involves skin rejuvenation, wrinkle removal, eye rejuvenation, or acne scar revision. Remember, it is the method and not the machine that delivers the best results. The balance of skin texture, tone, and volume will give the most natural results. Treatments such as skin needling, microneedling, PRP, Juvederm, Restylane fillers, Botox, and skin boosters can also augment the end results after laser resurfacing. Skin care with the Vitamin ABC, AHA creams and most importantly a good sunscreen will prolong the results following ablative laser resurfacing.
