CGQ Flashback Ep. 29 - Baseball | CGQ+

Once again we deviate from video games to talk about other aspects of the standard American 80's childhood. I know a lot of you don't give a toss about baseball or about sports in general, but this was an episode that I was excited to make, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Show notes: Recording the show in my car is certainly sub-optimal, but until life goes back to normal we're going to have to get more creative with our shooting locations. It would be nice to find a nice secluded outdoor spot. The last time I tried shooting an episode outdoors, there were people constantly walking past me on the trail, and it made me feel like a weirdo in the bushes with a camera. Even though this episode clocks in at almost 2 hours, I could have made it much longer. I find the whole history of baseball, both the good and the bad, fascinating, and Ken Burn's Baseball is one of my all-time favorite documentary series. I could also make an entire video about the history of baseball video games, but relatively speaking, no one would watch it. The original thumbnail for this video used the Pulitzer Prize-winning picture of Babe Ruth, known as "Babe Ruth Bows Out", taken by Nat Fein in 1948 shortly before Ruth's death. It wasn't until after I had uploaded the video that I remembered that Ken Burns used this same photo for the cover of "Baseball" (I don't blame him). So I swapped it out for what is actually my favorite picture of The Babe. This photo was taken in 1916 by sports photographer Charles Conlon, who also took one of the most famous pictures of Ty Cobb. In 1916, Ruth was playing for the Boston Red Sox in just his second year as a major leaguer, and, not yet known as the power hitter that he later became, was one of the best starting pitchers in the majors. In 1916 Ruth's record as a starting pitcher was 23-12, and he set a regular season shutouts record of 9 games, which would not even be tied by another pitcher for over 60 years. The Red Sox won the World series that year, with Ruth pitching a complete 14-inning game 2, which he won 2-1.
