Risky Glass! | 1987 OTIS (mod. EET) @ 2 Emily Place, Auckland CBD

[ 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚: 23/1/2026 ] One of the more infamous glass elevators in Central Auckland! This actually used to be an 80's OTIS—presumably Lexan w/ digital segmented indicators—that got modernised by EET in 2009, per their own website. (Their site has actually undergone a makeover as of late, so unfortunately you can't find it anymore.) That same page also outlined exactly what got changed out in the mod: to quote, "the old motor and gearbox was [sic] removed, new motor and gearbox installed, new traction ropes installed and new electrics and electronics systems brought [sic] online." And I'll give them this.... It's better than some of their other work. Obviously, I love the fact that it's glass, but it would've already been glass before the mod. It's decently fast, clocking in at 1.5 m/s (once again, per their website); not sure if that fully justifies only 1 lift for this 11-storey building, but I'm sure it would've been perfectly adequate in '87 lol. The fixtures are.... yuck. Not a fan of Tung Da and either indicator — and in fact, I'm pretty sure that inside one was replaced from the same design as those of Smith + Caughey's' elevators. Although I do like how locked floors light up in red to signal the lockout. Definitely a very polarising elevator, and while I lean marginally closer towards the 🆖 side, it's still undoubtedly a fun ride. Good to finally get to it!
