This Lake District MTB Loop Went Wrong

We start from WHA House car park at the bottom of Hardknott Pass on the Scafell Pike side, with temperatures at -5°C — and what followed was one of the most intense and remote MTB adventures I’ve ridden. The ride begins with a climb up Hardknott Pass before joining the bridleway toward Birks, then a tough ascent up Harter Fell — not huge (around 250m from Hardknott), but rocky, bumpy, and with a short hike-a-bike section. The reward at the summit? 360° mountain wilderness views, with the Scafell Pike massif as a dramatic backdrop — easily one of the most incredible summits I’ve come across in a while. The descent is where things get wild. What the map marks as a bridleway turned into raw, rocky, fast-flowing terrain, dropping halfway down Harter Fell toward Dunnerdale Forest. And then… HELL hit. A sketchy, super-steep section that tests every skill — but the rush of survival and flow is unbeatable. After surviving that, we continued through a loop around Dunnerdale Forest and Grassguards Gill, riding in true remote Lake District wilderness before finishing with a final epic descent back to Jubilee Bridge at the bottom of Hardknott Pass. 💡 Tip: The full Harter Fell summit descent is Sketchy — only attempt if you’re confident on steep, technical off-piste terrain. Otherwise, the loop alone is still an epic ride.
