As an iconic spot in Pune, Hollywood Gurudwara has been a place of worship for the past 56 years and it’s still standing tall in all its white marble glory! So what makes this Gurudwara special? Let’s find out! Located in the serene cantonment area of Pune, The Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar is one of Pune’s most beloved and beautiful Gurudwaras. A lot of people refer to this Gurudwara as the Hollywood Gurudwara. One might wonder why? The story goes that many moons ago there used to be a club for the British by the name of Hollywood Club, that stood exactly where the Gurudwara is now. The club featured cabaret and other forms of western entertainment which created a lot of noise while hurting the sentiments of the people living nearby. The club was later closed down and it was officially given off by the army to the Poona Camp Sikh Association Trust and remains under the same authority till date. Back in 1964, there was just one hall surrounded by open space. Gyani Ji’s name has been synonymous with the Gurudwara Gurunanak Darbar (Hollywood) in the city. He transformed what used to be a small little prayer room on a piece of land in 1964 into its current avatar — a huge religious space with a charitable hospital and school. It also provides lodging facilities, langar facilities and even a community hall for celebrations. The Gurudwara is made in all white marble and the pristine white beauty is absolutely a sight for sore eyes. And the best part is that anybody and everybody, irrespective of caste, class and sex is welcome to seek blessings here. If you’re heading to the Gurudwara, do keep in mind that one needs to take off their shoes before entering and one must cover their heads with a scarf as a form of respect (if you don’t have one on you, there are a few available at the counter where you deposit your footwear). As soon as you enter the Gurudwara, one can hear the formal Punjabi greeting ‘Sat Sri Akaal’. Men and women have to sit on their respective sides. There are no idols, statues or pictures, instead, the most important thing inside is the holy book of the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib. The place of worship offers a peaceful sanctuary filled with good energy. You can also make a pitstop at the Sikh Museum that was opened in 2010. The museum is dedicated to the history of Sikhism with paintings of the 11 gurus, invasion of the Mongols, the army as well as some information regarding the different laws Sikhs must follow.
