Gdzie zniknęła koszulka, w której Polska wybiła Anglię z mundialu
Jan Domarski was the striker who, on October 17, 1973, knocked England out of the World Cup with a single shot at Wembley and secured Poland's qualification for the World Cup in West Germany. This is the story of a man from the Podkarpacie region whose goal became legendary, while the scorer himself remained in the shadows for decades. That night in London, England had dozens of shots, Poland only two on target—and it was the hosts who lost the tournament. After a pass from Grzegorz Lato, Domarski struck first-time, and the ball went under goalkeeper Peter Shilton. A one-on-one draw was enough for Kazimierz Górski's team to qualify for the 1974 World Cup. Jan Tomaszewski, previously ridiculed in the UK, saved the Polish goal a dozen times that night. Behind his success, however, lies a life full of blanks. Domarski was born a year after the war in Drabinianka near Rzeszów. For twelve seasons, he held Stal Rzeszów's record—205 matches and 55 goals—yet the national team invited him only twice. Only a transfer to Stal Mielec and the club's first-ever Polish championship opened the door for him to the national team. After winning bronze at the World Cup, clubs in the Netherlands and France wanted to sign him, but a move to the West was blocked. He didn't join Nîmes Olympique de France until he was in his thirties, after his prime had passed. This is a story about selective memory: a goal honored with an award, the documentary "Golden Gate," and a scene in Wojciech Smarzowski's "The Wedding"—and about a man whose face few people still recognize. The film leads through archives where dates diverge, names get confused, and numbers disappear, until it reaches the calm voice of the protagonist himself, who, in his seventies, finally told his side of the story.
