In 986 AD, Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria ambushed and destroyed the Byzantine army at the Gates of Trajan. He laughed over the dead. Basil II never forgot. For 28 years he burned his way through Bulgaria, city by city, fortress by fortress, until in 1014 AD at the Battle of Kleidion, he captured 15,000 Bulgarian soldiers and issued one of the most chilling orders in medieval history. Blind them all. Leave one eye per hundred men. Send them home. When Samuel saw his army return, he was dead within two days. This is that story. Emperor Basil II, known to history as Βουλγαροκτόνος, the Bulgar-Slayer, ordered the blinding of 15,000 Bulgarian prisoners of war. For every 100 men, 99 were fully blinded. One was left with a single eye to lead the others home to Tsar Samuel. When Samuel saw them return, he suffered a fatal collapse and died two days later. The Bulgarian Empire never recovered.
