Nostos - Homers Odyssey - Ancient Greek Song (English Subtitles)

A song sung in Ancient Greek, drawn from the oldest story in Western literature. Odysseus and his men have just left Troy. They make landfall at Ismarus, sack the city, and feast on the shore. Odysseus tells them to leave. They don't listen. At dawn the Cicones return with reinforcements that come like leaves and flowers in spring, and the Greeks lose six men from every single ship before they can reach the water. Then the wind takes them. Nine days on an open savage sea before they reach a place where some of the men eat a flower and simply forget. Forget the ships. Forget Troy. Forget that there is a home waiting for them across the water. They weep, but they want to stay. Odysseus drags them back by force and ties them under the rowing benches. The Greek word for homecoming is νόστος. It is what the entire Odyssey is built around. The hunger to return. The things that try to stop you. And the question of what happens to the men who stop wanting to. English subtitles included throughout. This is the first in a series working through the Odyssey. #ancientgreece #greekhistory #odyssey #mythology #odysseus #epicmusic #history #storymusic #cinematicmusic #greece #ancienthistory #melancholicmusic #melancholy
