We tried to find Japan's most difficult to access onsen hut. Niigata prefecture located on the north coast of Japan is known for its endless rice fields, delicious Japanese sake and it’s Japanese hot springs, otherwise known as onsen in Japanese. Hot springs in Japan are very famous and if it’s your first time visiting Japan, we definitely recommend you to visit a Japanese hot spring. Japanese onsen baths are full of mineral rich water which will leave your skin feeling smoother and looking younger. We ended up spending much more time in Niigata, Japan than we had planned and over the past few episodes we have shared some useful information if you are looking for what to do in Niigata ken. In this van life Japan video, we head right off the beaten track in our DIY camper van and attempt find Japan’s most difficult to access onsen hut. This Japanese onsen hut cannot be accessed by vehicle so we take a break from Japanese camper van life and set off on foot in search of the hut. While walking, we meet some unexpected wildlife and are not sure we can make it all the way to this unique Niigata onsen hut. Travelling Japan by van and being full time van lifers in Japan is an incredible way to overland Japan and get off the beaten path. We have managed to visit so many amazing places during the 16 months of our slow travel camper van trip in Japan. Converting a DIY camper van in Japan has been one of the best decisions we have ever made and car camping in Japan is so easy due to the huge amount of Japanese roadside stations, free campsites and onsen throughout the country.
