This is a session from the making of the Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) song Salt Lake City, which Brian Wilson meticulously arranges with care despite many claiming the song to be "filler." This backing track was recorded on March 30th, at Western Studios. What you will hear: -The unique doubling bass sound/intro, played by Carol Kaye on an electric bass, paired with Lyle Ritz on upright. -The unused guitar riff, played either by Carl Wilson or Jerry Cole. -Brian Wilson listening back to Leon Russel play and adjust the organ isolated, apart from other musicians. Brian adjusting the tambourine percussion rhythm (throughout this video) And the great sax arrangement played by Steve Douglas, Jay Migliori, and Plas Johnson. And Brian cracking a little joke. The driving rhythm of the organ and vibraphone with the swaying saxophones gives this track a moving, colorful feel that's classy and modern and an iconic and underrated pop-rock gem of 65'. Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) is important to be documented in Beach Boys history because of creative and original backing tracks like these. I feel like many people wrongly accuse this album as being an appeasement for Capitol Records when Brian Wilson admitted to having lots of fun on this album, and it being one of his favorites, and claimed "California Girls" was the Beach Boys anthem.
