Hello, I’m Sangwook Lee. After living for more than 40 years, I realized at some point that I had become the kind of person who was always saying “yes” and “it’s okay” --a yes-man, an okay-man. I’m not sure if I was a good person to everyone. But even when my energy was completely drained, I would put others first and find it impossible to say no to their requests. I thought that was what being kind meant. But over time, the consideration and sacrifice I continued to give in the name of kindness slowly began to consume me. Perhaps I was a kind person to others, but I wasn’t being kind to myself. As I became more and more exhausted, I started avoiding people, and there was even a period when I retreated into a cave of my own making. After going through that season of my life, I made a decision. I would stop living as a tool for other people and start living my own life fully and authentically. And only then did I realize something. When you respect and love yourself first, you can share a greater love with others and maintain healthy relationships for much longer. There was a time when I tried so hard to be a good person that all I was left with were unhealthy relationships. It was only after living through that experience that I learned an important lesson: You do not need to be a nice person to everyone. You can keep your goodness, but kindness also needs boundaries and firmness.
