The Panther / Der Panther — after Rainer Maria Rilke

A musical and visual interpretation of "Der Panther" by the German-language poet Rainer Maria Rilke, written in 1902 and published in his 1907 collection Neue Gedichte. The poem watches a caged panther pacing its endless circle until the world beyond the bars has ceased to exist for it. Only rarely does an image still enter through its eyes, pass through the body, and die before it reaches the heart. The lyrics are an English adaptation of Rilke's original German text, keeping close to the three stanzas while shaping them into a song. The video follows the panther from its circling behind the bars, into a brief dream of movement and warmth, and back again to a single eye in which the bars are mirrored.
