Making tinder from horse hoof fungus

Making tinder from the trama layer of horse hoof fungus also called tinder fungus. To be used with flint and steel. These hoof fungus was taken from beech (Fagus sylvatica) where they can grow very big as you can see in the video. But they are very common on birch as well and you don't need big ones. Remove the outer hard crust and underneath you find the trama layer. Cut thin slices from the trama layer, 2-4 mm thick. Boil the slices for 2-3 hours in a ash solution consisting of water and ash, about 1/3 to 1/2 of ash. Take out the slices and pound them gently with a wooden mallet to remove some of the ash solution and let them dry. To use the tinder with flint and steel you tear off a piece. You then get a fluffy edge. Don't touch the edge, This is where you want the sparks to get stuck. Put the tinder on top of the flint, close to the flint edge, and strike sparks into it. Hope you enjoy
