He Left the City for a Life in the Himalayas
Hidden in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, far beyond roads and city noise, we discovered a house that is not just built to live in. It is built to test how we should build in the mountains. Deep in the remote village of Kafura in Nainital, a place you can only reach by a rugged 4x4 trail, an architect left Delhi to begin a quiet experiment. This is Nitin Gupta and Himalayan Prayogshala. Here, surrounded by dense forests and mist, he is rethinking how we build in the Himalayas. His work explores sustainable architecture, off-grid living, and experimental home design in one of the most seismically sensitive regions in the world. These are not conventional homes. They are modular, low-impact structures designed to be dismantled, relocated, and rebuilt. The idea is to reduce long-term impact on fragile mountain terrain. At the same time, they are built to respond to earthquakes, which are a real concern in the Himalayas where terrain, weather, and seismic activity all shape how construction should happen. This is where architecture meets resilience. Far from city life, Nitin lives here with his three dogs, building and testing ideas that could shape the future of mountain homes, eco resorts, boutique stays, and off-grid cabins, not just in India but across the world. This is not just a house tour. This is a story about design, travel, sustainability, and a different way of living.
