A study by the Rotterdam-based consulting firm Port Consultants recommends postponing the construction of the Outer Port of San Antonio, one of the country's most ambitious infrastructure projects. According to Daniel Fernández, president of the Chilean Maritime and Port Chamber (CAMPORT), the recommendation does not imply canceling the project, but rather temporarily freezing it while monitoring the evolution of port demand. The main reason is that the economic growth projected fifteen years ago has not materialized, and container traffic has remained virtually stagnant over the last decade. Currently, the central region handles approximately 2.7 million containers annually, a figure that can still be absorbed through operational improvements and the expansion of the Port of Valparaíso. This alternative would allow for increased port capacity with an investment of approximately US$900 million, significantly less than the US$1.9 billion required just to construct the breakwater for the San Antonio megaport. However, the scenario could change if exports of copper, lithium, and other strategic minerals continue to grow, especially considering the reactivation of binational projects with Argentina and the development of transoceanic corridors. The underlying discussion is not solely about infrastructure.
