Title: Acetate Textile Fiber Description: The main properties of acetate fibers are described. Bonet Aracil, MA. (2018). Acetate Textile Fiber. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/103644 Automatic description: In this video, the professor from the Department of Textile and Paper Engineering at the Polytechnic University offers an overview of acetate fiber. Its physical and chemical properties are discussed, as well as how they affect final textile use. The presentation emphasizes the importance of studying these properties to determine the behavior of the textile product they comprise. Acetate fiber, classified among chemical fibers, is derived from a natural polymer obtained from plants. There are two types based on the degree of hydroxylation: acetate and triacetate. Its manufacturing process determines its length, fineness, and crimp, while its tenacity is low and its resilience is reduced, which implies a tendency to wrinkle and the need for ironing to recover its shape. Its unusual melting point for a cellulose-derived fiber is notable, giving it semi-plastic properties. In terms of appearance, acetate is generally shiny and provides a pleasant feel, and is considered a semi-synthetic fiber. Despite its cellulosic origin, it cannot be dyed using the same techniques applicable to natural fibers due to the acetyl groups. Chemically, acetate fibers have an intermediate legal moisture content, being susceptible to shrinkage in water and sensitive to alkalis, although resistant to certain solvents. Their tendency to accumulate static electricity is due to their low moisture retention. In conclusion, acetate fiber, cellulose-based but chemically modified, has an unusual melting point for cellulosic fibers and a chemistry that distinguishes it in terms of acid resistance and dye affinities. The video closes with a thank you for your attention.
