Title: Wool Textile Fibers Description: The main properties of wool fibers are presented. Bonet Aracil, MA. (2016). Wool Textile Fibers. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/67233 Automatic description: In this video, the professor from the Department of Textile and Paper Engineering at the Polytechnic University offers an introduction to wool textile fibers, addressing their characteristics and applications. The physical and chemical properties of wool are detailed and conclude with important considerations for its use in textiles. Wool is classified as a natural fiber of animal origin, derived primarily from the fleece of sheep and other animals such as alpaca and vicuña. When observed under a microscope, scales can be identified on its surface that can cause itching upon contact with the skin. This varies depending on the quality of the wool and the individual's sensitivity. Regarding its physical properties, wool varies in length, fineness, and crimp, influenced by the breed of animal. It has low tenacity, but good resilience and the ability to recover its shape, especially when exposed to water vapor. In terms of abrasion, its resistance is medium and it has a tendency to pill when combined with other fibers. Wool is a fiber that does not melt and insulates well against both cold and heat, having a high natural resistance to fire. Its chemical properties include high moisture absorption, both in the environment and when immersed in water, which influences the need for specific washing treatments that consider the fiber's sensitivity to high temperatures, friction, and alkaline pH. It concludes by mentioning how solvents, acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents affect wool in various ways, and how light and moths can degrade it. It concludes by summarizing that the type of wool varies depending on the animal, with a range of applications depending on its physical properties and skin contact, as well as its reactivity to certain chemicals and washing instructions.
