Seattle Faces $175M Budget Deficit Despite Rising Tax Revenue
Seattle City Councilmember Bob Kettle is calling for significant budget reforms as the city prepares to address a projected $175 million budget deficit for 2027. Despite general fund revenues increasing substantially in recent years through property taxes, sales taxes, utility taxes and business payroll taxes, Kettle argues the city can no longer rely on simply building each year's budget on top of the previous one. Instead, he is urging city leaders to review departments, reduce overhead and prioritize core government responsibilities. Kettle also points to King County's recent efforts to restructure spending as an example of the type of fiscal restraint Seattle should consider. He argues the city should reevaluate programs, consultant spending and tax policies while addressing long-term affordability concerns for residents. The proposal comes as Seattle continues to debate spending priorities, taxation and how to close a growing structural budget gap without placing additional burdens on taxpayers. #Seattle #Budget #SeattlePolitics #FiscalResponsibility #TaxpayerAccountability #WashingtonPolitics #WashingtonNews #TheCenterSquare #WashingtonInFocus
