In 1937, two fishermen near Alton, Illinois pulled a bull shark out of the Mississippi River, roughly 1,740 river miles from the sea. It is still the farthest inland a shark has ever been confirmed in North America. For decades it was written off as a fluke. It wasn't. Bull sharks rewrite their own body chemistry to survive freshwater, and in Lake Pontchartrain researchers keep pulling up pups still carrying umbilical scars. They aren't lost out here.
