The joint forest site inspection – a key element towards futrue-fit forests and hunting
The structured forest inspection – a key to sustainable forests and hunting: A film by PEFC Germany (PEFC Hesse), the German Federal Association of the Working Group for Natural Forest Management (ANW), the European Forest Institute (@EuropeanForest ) and the Freiburg Hunters’ Association e. V., produced and presented by FORST erklärt (@Forsterklaert ). Excessive game populations in the forest threaten biodiversity and hinder the development of climate-resilient mixed forests. For forest owners, this can lead to additional financial costs as well as ecological and economic losses. This applies in particular to forest owners who manage their forests in accordance with PEFC forest standards: unmanaged game populations can result in the loss of PEFC certification and, where applicable, funding. Forest owners have various options for working towards maintaining appropriate game populations. In addition to drawing up a forest-friendly hunting lease agreement, trusting cooperation with the person authorised to carry out hunting is crucial. Regular dialogue, joint site inspections and coordinated objectives lay the foundation for game management tailored to silvicultural requirements and help to support natural forest development as well as the requirements of the PEFC standards. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:44 Explanation of a joint forest site inspection 00:01:06 The key points of a joint forest site inspection 00:01:42 Kay Hagemann / WiWaldI project on defining the objectives of a joint forest site inspection 00:02:39 Guidance / template report for a joint forest site inspection (PEFC-compliant documentation template) 00:03:02 Issues relating to the separation of species and bark stripping 00:03:34 Assessment of game damage (Weisergatter, fenced forest areas); Hunting training provided by the Freiburg Hunters’ Association 00:06:39 The role of managed game populations for PEFC-certified forest owners 00:08:05 Summary: Benefits of a joint forest inspection by forest owners and foresters together with hunters The WiWaldI project provides helpful tools – e.g. checklists and model lease agreements – to help achieve appropriate game populations. The document mentioned in the video is available here: https://www.wild-wald-innovation.de/d... Background information: WiWaldI stands for WILD – WALD – INNOVATION. The aim of this funded project is to develop diverse forest ecosystems that are resilient to climate change. This is to be achieved, amongst other things, through appropriate silvicultural and hunting measures, communication and coordinated action by those responsible. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ PEFC is the largest organisation dedicated to ensuring sustainable forest management through an independent certification system. Timber and timber products bearing the PEFC label are verifiably sourced from ecologically, economically and socially sustainable forestry. In Germany, PEFC is the leading forest certification system: with over eight million hectares of certified forest area, around three-quarters of Germany’s forests are already PEFC-certified.
