Hello! In the latest installment of the Postwar series, I explore an incredibly broad and fascinating topic: the disintegration of the British colonial empire. In the 19th century, Great Britain triumphed. Its power seemed eternal – London controlled major trade routes and vast territories on almost every continent. British influence on the world was immense. London's rulers were masters of the globe, and their subjects achieved success in science, technology, and economics. This golden age, however, did not last forever. In the 20th century, the empire began to crumble. The system that had seemed indestructible gradually crumbled. Step by step, London lost control of its colonies, yielded, and handed power to local communities. The turning point came in 1960, later known as the Year of Africa, when the process of decolonization accelerated, and British rule on the African continent began to collapse like a house of cards. Today, I will analyze this process. I will show you step by step what the collapse of the great British Empire looked like. Watch the video. I also touch on the Gold Coast – contemporary Ghana.
