For those catching up, Brendan Sorsby is a college quarterback whose gambling activity led to an NCAA ban. The allegations involved thousands of bets, including wagers involving his own team, and the use of intermediaries to avoid detection. The NCAA banned him. A judge in Lubbock granted an injunction allowing him to play. The NCAA appealed and won. Sorsby then turned to the NFL supplemental draft as a potential path forward. Roger Goodell and the NFL just shut that door. The league announced it will not hold a supplemental draft this summer. A letter was sent to Sorsby and all 32 teams. His only path to the NFL now appears to be the 2027 NFL Draft. Why the NFL Was Right The NFL's position on gambling is one of the clearest policies in professional sports. The league has consistently imposed severe penalties for betting on games, sharing inside information, or using others to place wagers. Given Sorsby's history, the NFL appears to have made a simple determination: the league would not become an escape route from the consequences of his actions. The NFL's relationship with sports betting also makes integrity enforcement more important than ever. The league has spent years building systems designed to detect irregular betting activity. Allowing someone with Sorsby's record to bypass that process would undermine the message it has repeatedly sent to players. Jeffrey Kessler's Argument Sorsby's attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, quickly argued that the NFL's decision violated both the collective bargaining agreement and the law. Trey disagrees. First, Sorsby is not an NFL player and is not represented by the NFLPA. The collective bargaining agreement governs the relationship between the league and its players. Second, the CBA gives the NFL broad discretion regarding whether to hold a supplemental draft at all. The league has not held one since 2019 and was under no obligation to conduct one this year. The NFL's position is straightforward: the supplemental draft is optional, and the league chose not to hold it. Trey's larger point is that threatening litigation against the league you hope to join is an unusual strategy, particularly when NFL teams are under no obligation to draft any player. The Deflategate Comparison Trey draws a comparison to Deflategate. Whatever people think about the underlying facts of that controversy, the legal outcome ultimately came down to the authority granted to Roger Goodell under the collective bargaining agreement. Courts upheld that authority. The NFL's discretion regarding the supplemental draft is a similar concept. The league has broad authority in this area, and there appears to be little room to challenge that decision successfully. What Comes Next Sorsby now faces a different reality. If he wants to continue pursuing professional football, he will likely need to find another avenue to play and develop while waiting for future opportunities. The 2027 NFL Draft remains a possibility, but everything that has happened will remain part of the evaluation process. Trey makes one thing clear: this is not about rooting against Brendan Sorsby as a person. He hopes Sorsby addresses the gambling issues that helped derail his career and finds a path forward. But accountability still matters. For now, the NFL has made its position clear. The supplemental draft will not be an option, and any path back to professional football will have to come another way.
