Justin Leonard Breaks Down US Open at Shinnecock — Course, Contenders & Scottie's Chase for History
Justin Leonard Breaks Down the US Open at Shinnecock — The Course, the Contenders, and Scottie's Chase for History Subscribe to support the channel: / @treywingopresents Justin Leonard knows what it takes to win on golf's biggest stages. The 1997 Open Champion. A three-time Ryder Cup player. The man who made the putt at Brookline in 1999 that completed one of the greatest comebacks in Ryder Cup history. Now a vice captain for Team USA heading into 2027, Justin joins Trey for a conversation covering Shinnecock, the Ryder Cup, and a few personal stories along the way. Shinnecock — American Links Golf Justin's description of Shinnecock is simple: American links. Not modeled after anything else. Just itself. The history between Shinnecock and the U.S. Open has not always been smooth. In 2004, the USGA watered a green between groups because conditions became unplayable. In 2018, Brooks Koepka won at one over par after the course was softened enough on Sunday for Tommy Fleetwood to shoot 63. Justin's hope is simple — let the story be the course, the difficulty, and the champion, not controversy. At Shinnecock, the difference between fair and unfair is measured in inches. Who Is Built for This Despite expectations of another Scottie Scheffler-Rory McIlroy showdown, Justin would take the field over either player. Three names stand out: Cameron Young — playing with confidence, driving it beautifully, and completely unfazed by results. Justin sees him regularly in Florida and says his temperament is perfect for Shinnecock. Brooks Koepka — the 2018 champion at Shinnecock, showing signs of the form that produced five major titles. If the putter cooperates, he becomes a serious threat. Alex Fitzpatrick — the sleeper. Multiple top-10s, a Zurich win with brother Matt, and a links background that fits Shinnecock's firm conditions and runoff areas. Trey adds another name: Aaron Rai, statistically one of the PGA Tour's most accurate drivers and an ideal fit for a course where fairways are everything. Scottie's Grand Slam Chase Scottie Scheffler is one win away from the career Grand Slam. Justin believes the expectations around Scheffler have become so high that people ask, "What's wrong with him?" despite another outstanding season. The issue has been slow starts. Scheffler has repeatedly played himself into contention after mediocre opening rounds. That works in regular tour events, but major championships are far less forgiving. As for the Grand Slam itself, Justin does not think Scottie is thinking about it at all. Family and faith keep him grounded, and his focus remains on the tournament in front of him. Team USA and the Ryder Cup Justin is now a vice captain under Jim Furyk for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. The bigger story, though, is long-term planning. Furyk and his staff are thinking beyond 2027 and building continuity into future Ryder Cups. That includes fixing past scheduling mistakes. In 2018, the U.S. team flew to France immediately after the Tour Championship. In 2023, players had five weeks off before Rome. For 2027, there are two weeks between the Tour Championship and Adare Manor. Justin sees that as ideal, allowing players time to acclimate and build the kind of chemistry Europe has mastered for years. The Personal Stories Two moments from Justin's career close the conversation. The first is his acceptance speech at the 1997 Open Championship, where he became emotional thinking about his parents and coach back home. He says people reference that speech more than any shot he hit that week. The second is Brookline in 1999. Justin walks through the putt on the 17th hole that clinched the largest comeback in Ryder Cup history — knowing a win there would secure the Cup, watching the putt break right and fall, and then seeing teammates storm the green before the match was technically over. More than twenty-five years later, it remains the defining moment of his career and perhaps the moment people will remember most if a future Ryder Cup captaincy is in the cards.
