[A Legendary Race to Pass Down to the Future: 1999 Arima Kinen (GⅠ) Commentary] Grass Wonder, the American-bred two-year-old champion and winner of the previous year's Arima Kinen, was joined by Special Week, the Japanese Derby winner who had won the Spring and Autumn Tenno Sho and the Japan Cup. These two horses of the same generation first faced off at the Takarazuka Kinen that year, with Grass Wonder winning by a margin of three lengths. The Arima Kinen was the second round. The race was run at a slow pace. Glass Wonder was in 11th place, with Special Week chasing at the back of the 14 horses. As Glass Wonder made a move coming out of the third corner, Special Week followed closely, marking him. In the straight, Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi had broken away, and the three-year-old TM Opera O was closing in on him. From the outside, Glass Wonder and Special Week charged forward, competing with each other. Could this be a repeat victory for the foreign-bred monster? Or revenge for the Derby winner? They crossed the finish line side-by-side, and after a photo finish, Glass Wonder rose and fell to take the lead by a nose. This was only the third horse in history to win the Arima Kinen twice in a row. It was a close race between two great horses that will go down in Japanese horse racing history.
