This article explains pruning for young, five-year-old trees. By the fifth year, the main branches will have grown to nearly 70% of their target length. Side branches will not appear until the main branches (skeletal branches) have grown to a certain thickness. Therefore, at this age, you must be conscious of both the growth and thickness of the main branches. You want to leave the tips of the main branches longer and prune them back, but the further away from the main trunk they are, the weaker their vigor becomes. If you leave them too long, the new shoots that appear the following year will be shorter. Prune them back heavily, about 30cm. Side branches near the tip serve to draw in nutrients and water and to prevent the tips of the main branches from swaying. Even if a lateral branch has grown for two years, if it is not yet overtaking the main branch, it can be trellised. Prune it back very gently. You can weaken it even more by training it toward the main trunk. Also cut off any short fruiting branches directly above or near the main trunk, and finally apply a protective agent to all cut ends.
