This article explains how to prune the main branches of young, third-year trees. Young trees prioritize growth until the main branches reach the target position. Therefore, the key is to keep the tips high and secure the new shoots that appear the following year so they don't sway. In the second year, cut back, leaving about 70% of the growth that year, but from the third year onwards, cut back more heavily, leaving less than 50%.
