Of course he knows nothing about the subject, but this isn’t enough to prevent him from buying a large, expensive telescope. With great reluctance, his friends help him get it up to the rood –or rather Rat and Mole do the work while Toad does the talking. Rat and Mole do not relish the idea of spending the night with Toad on the roof, and abandon him up there. At first, he is quite happy stargazing, and even manages to sight Halley’s Comet. This comet, which in Toad’s opinion should be re-names Toad’s Comet is, unbeknown to him, little more than the lantern of the weasels, who are sneaking up on Toad Hall to steal his ladder. This was his only means of getting down from the roof, and after a long, cold night spent with the pigeons, Toad has lost his enthusiasm for Astronomy, much to the relief of his friends.
