"The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment" during the Vietnam War (1969) - REEL History

The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, also known as the "Blackhorse," was a U.S. Army unit that deployed to Vietnam in 1966, where they primarily operated armored personnel carriers and engaged in combat against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces, making them one of the few large armored cavalry units to fight in the war; they were particularly known for their mobile operations in the open terrain of III Corps Tactical Zone near Saigon. When the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment arrived in South Vietnam, in September 1966, the unit faced a number of challenges: The enemy—Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA); but also the terrain and weather. The lack of doctrine and tactics for the employment of armored cavalry in a counterinsurgency was equally challenging—especially during the pre-deployment training and initial combat operations.
